【Higher Grade】 50 Sen “3 Spines” 1871 (Meiji 4) MS65 PL

¥850,000

説明

DetailThis is an extraordinary early-Meiji silver half yen, struck in 1871 (Meiji 4) — one of Japan’s very first standardized silver issues following the country’s modernization of its minting system.Certified PCGS MS65 Prooflike (PL), this coin displays deep mirror fields and frosted design elements rarely preserved to such a degree.

Variety: “3 Spines / Small Flame”

The “3 Spines” subtype (JNDA 01-13A) shows a distinct die variety in the dragon’s tail, featuring three small spines and a compact flame motif.

As illustrated above, this differs from the more common “2 Spines / Large Flame” type.

According to the latest PCGS population data, only 4 coins are certified as MS65 PL, with just 1 graded higher, underscoring its rarity even among PL-designated specimens.

●Market Context

Prooflike (“PL”) examples of Meiji-era 50 Sen coins are seldom encountered in any subtype. Even for later issues — such as the Meiji 37 (1904) 50 Sen — highest-grade PL coins have realized over ¥1,000,000, demonstrating the strong premium collectors place on reflective-surface specimens.

Combining technical excellence, variety rarity, and early Meiji historical importance, this piece represents one of the finest attainable examples of Japan’s first-generation silver coinage.
